Emergency Orthodontic Care

Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but they can happen—especially when braces or appliances experience unexpected pressure or impact. At Coastal Smiles Family Orthodontics, we’re here to help you stay comfortable and protect your smile throughout treatment. Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories: issues related to your appliances or direct injuries to the mouth and teeth.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Brackets, wires, and other appliances can occasionally loosen or bend during treatment. While most situations are manageable at home for a short time, we encourage you to call our office during patient hours so we can schedule an appointment and resolve the issue safely.

Common appliance concerns and what you can do:

  • Irritating tie wire:
Place orthodontic wax over the area or gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a pencil eraser or Q-tip.

  • Loose bracket or band:
These can usually remain in place until we see you. Contact our office so we can schedule a repair appointment if needed.

  • Broken or poking wire:
Try bending the wire toward the tooth with a clean pencil eraser. If necessary, you may trim the wire with disinfected nail clippers. After managing discomfort, call us during office hours so we can check and correct the issue.

To ensure the best care for all patients, we are unable to accept walk-in emergency visits. Please call ahead so we can accommodate you promptly.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth

If you experience trauma to the mouth, whether or not you are in orthodontic treatment, immediate attention is important. Apply ice to reduce swelling and contact your family dentist as soon as possible. Dental injuries such as displaced, fractured, or knocked-out teeth require urgent dental care and X-rays to assess damage.

Once your general dentist has addressed the injury, Dr. Cardinal will evaluate your orthodontic appliances. If your braces have been loosened, bent, or displaced, we’ll schedule a follow-up visit to adjust or replace them as needed.

After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies

If a true orthodontic emergency occurs outside of regular office hours and you are in pain, please contact our office. Our voicemail will provide instructions on who to reach for further assistance. We’re committed to helping you feel comfortable until we can see you in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orthodontic emergencies can feel stressful, especially for parents and teens. The good news? Most issues are manageable and rarely threaten your overall treatment progress. Below are answers to common questions Naples families ask about braces emergencies and urgent orthodontic care.

What is considered a true orthodontic emergency?

A true orthodontic emergency usually involves significant pain, swelling, trauma, or bleeding. Examples include facial injury, severe infection, or a knocked-out tooth. Minor discomfort, loose brackets, or poking wires are typically urgent but not true emergencies and can often be temporarily managed at home until your scheduled visit.

In most cases, a short delay will not significantly impact your overall timeline. However, leaving a bracket loose for too long can affect tooth movement. That’s why we recommend calling our office promptly to schedule a repair.

Most sports-related issues can be repaired quickly. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard greatly reduces the risk of broken brackets or oral injury. If damage occurs, we’ll assess and restore your appliances as soon as possible.

We prioritize patients who are experiencing discomfort or appliance issues. Calling during office hours allows us to schedule you as quickly as possible and provide immediate instructions for comfort in the meantime.

Mild soreness is common, but if pain feels unusual or intense, start with orthodontic wax, salt-water rinses, and over-the-counter pain relief. If discomfort persists beyond a few days or worsens, contact our office so we can evaluate the issue.
